Qinghai Lake (also called Qinghai Hu) is China’s largest saltwater lake, located in Qinghai Province on the Tibetan Plateau. The name “Qinghai” means “Blue Sea” in Chinese because the lake’s water is clear and vividly blue.
The lake sits at about 3,200 meters (10,500 feet) above sea level and covers over 4,000 square kilometers. It’s surrounded by grasslands, snow-capped mountains, and vast open skies, making it a stunning natural destination.
Qinghai Lake is famous for its bird island, where thousands of migratory birds come to nest in spring and summer. It’s also a sacred place for Tibetan and Mongolian people, who hold religious rituals and horse races nearby. The lake is popular for cycling tours, nature photography, and watching the beautiful sunrise and sunset.
