Commissioned by King Charles IV of Bohemia, construction began in 1357 and was completed in the early 15th century. Charles Bridge is the most important thoroughfare connecting Old Town (Staré Mestó) with Prague Castle (Pražský hrad) and the surrounding area, making Prague a vital trade route between Eastern and Western Europe. Charles Bridge has three towers at each end: two on the Lesser Town (Malá Strana) side and one on the Old Town (Staré Mestó) side. There are 30 statues on the bridge, most of which are in Baroque style and were erected around 1700. However, the statues seen today are replicas that were replaced after 1965. All the original statues were moved to museums for preservation to protect these precious Baroque works of art from weathering and damage by the environment.
