A Complete Guide to Exploring the Ancient City of Polonnaruwa in One Day

🔶🔶🔶Throughout history, certain places, like shining stars, have carried the weight of millennia of civilization and stories. The ancient city of Polonnaruwa in Sri Lanka is one such place. During my travels in Sri Lanka, I spent a day exploring this ancient city. Here, the remains of Sri Lanka's once glorious dynasties are preserved, with every brick and stone etched with the marks of time. 🚲My Cycling Route: Early in the morning, I departed from my hotel and arrived at the ancient city of Polonnaruwa. I rented a bicycle at the entrance and embarked on a day's journey of exploration. ➡️First, I visited the Nissankamalla Palace complex, the ruins of a former palace. Although only broken walls and remnants remain, the massive stones and layout still convey the grandeur of the original architecture. ➡️Next, I visited the Parakramabahu Palace complex, which is even larger. The architecture incorporates royal elements, and from the higher points of the palace, you can overlook parts of the ancient city. ➡️Afterwards, I went to Pabalu Vehera. The atmosphere inside the temple is serene, and the murals on the walls, though faded, still depict Buddhist stories with exquisite detail. ➡️Then, I visited the Siva Devale No. 2, a typical Hindu-style temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. ➡️Next was Potgul Vehera, a library building with distinctive thick walls and a vaulted roof. ➡️I strolled around the Lotus Bath, shaped like a blooming lotus flower, with intricate carvings along its edge. ➡️I proceeded to Gal Vihara (also known as Uttararama). Here, there are exquisite giant Buddha statues, carved with meticulous detail and lifelike facial expressions. It is one of the most awe-inspiring sights in the ancient city. ➡️Finally, I visited Rankot Vehera, the largest stupa in Polonnaruwa. Climbing the surrounding viewing platform offers a panoramic view of the ancient city. Under the glow of the setting sun, the ancient city appeared even more time-worn and magnificent, bringing a perfect end to the day's journey. 🌟Important Notes: 1️⃣The ancient city is quite large, so plan your time wisely. It is recommended to rent a bicycle at the entrance for touring to save energy. 2️⃣I didn't see any dining places within the scenic area. If you want to eat, you'll need to leave the area. 3️⃣There aren't many shaded areas within the scenic area, so take precautions against the sun.
