Plitvice Lakes National Park is the oldest and largest national park in Croatia. A spectacular water system formed by 16 interconnected lakes and numerous waterfalls. These lakes and waterfalls are formed by underground rivers and the dissolution and deposition of limestone. The water is rich in minerals and chemical elements, making the lake water appear in different colors, from light green to dark blue. Plitvice Lakes National Park is divided into two parts: the upper lake area and the lower lake area. The Upper Lake consists of 12 lakes at a higher altitude and surrounded by dense forests and mountains. They are known for their calm, restful beauty and varied colors that change with the seasons and sunlight. The Lower Lakes are four larger lakes located in limestone canyons with many spectacular waterfalls and cascades. To explore the park, you can choose from eight different hiking routes of varying lengths and difficulties (check the official website). The total length of the trails is about 18 kilometers. These trails are well marked, easy to follow, and offer views and perspectives of different lakes and waterfalls. It is possible to move between different parts of the park using the electric boat and panoramic train included in the ticket.
