Phongsunan Temple

Wat Phongsunan is a temple in the city walls of Phrae Province. It is located in Ban Phongsunan, Tambon Nai Wiang. Its original name was Wat Pongsanuk. It was originally an abandoned temple. To the south of the temple, there is a pond and a turtle statue. According to legend, Nang Kam Phuan, a Burmese woman, went down into the pond because she wanted a turtle and drowned. Her friend, Sang Tad, built a pagoda and four turtle statues around the pagoda to commemorate her friend. In 1929, Pho Chao Buri Sri Pannya restored the temple, but it was later damaged by fire and flooding. Phaya Burirat renovated it with Luang Phong Phibun and Chao Sunanta as the main believers in 1934. The temple was therefore named Wat Phongsunan. The ordination hall was built in 1956. Inside the temple, there is an outdoor reclining Buddha along the wall, which is the temple's unique feature. #Wat Phongsunan
