Wat Phra Sri Sanphet, the prototype of Wat Phra Sri Rattana Satsadaram

#VisitAyutthaya 🙏Wat Phra Si Sanphet is located to the north of Wihan Phra Mongkhon Bophit. It is an important temple built in the Grand Palace of Ayutthaya. During the reign of King Ramathibodi I (King U Thong), he built a royal palace as his residence in this area. Later, King Borommatrailokanat moved the palace to the north, so he dedicated this area to build a temple within the palace grounds to be a private temple for the king without monks living there. It was used for important royal ceremonies, including the water pouring ceremony twice a year. It is also the place where the ashes of almost all the kings of Ayutthaya are kept. Later, during the reign of King Ramathibodi II in 2035, he ordered the construction of two large stupas. The first one in the east was to enshrine the royal ashes of his father, King Borommatrailokanat, and the second one in the middle enshrined the royal ashes of his elder brother, King Borommarachathirat III. Later in 2042, he built a large temple and in 2043, he cast a standing Buddha image 8 wah high, covered in 286 chang of gold (approximately 171 kilograms), and enshrined it in the temple. It was named “Phra Si Sanphetdayan.” During the Rattanakosin period, King Rama I ordered that the damaged pieces of this principal Buddha image be enshrined in a large chedi that covered the Buddha’s core at Wat Phra Chetuphon Wimonmangklararm, and named it Chedi Phra Si Sanphetdayan after the principal Buddha image enshrined inside. As for the third chedi to the west, King Borommarachathirat IV (Phra Nop Phuttakun), his son, ordered the construction to enshrine the ashes of King Ramathibodi II. These three pagodas are Sri Lankan-style pagodas. Between each pagoda, there is a pavilion, which must have been built around the reign of King Prasat Thong. There are also traces of restoration. 🙏The Royal Vihara of the Royal Palace of Ayutthaya has the Phra Lokanath Vihara on the north side, the Phra Pa Lelai Vihara on the south side, and the Vihara on the north side. The Ubosot is on the south side. The pagodas are arranged in a rectangular frame, alternating with the Klaeb Vihara. ðŸĪ·â™‚ïļWat Phra Si Sanphet: Tambon Pratu Chai, Amphoe Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Province ðŸĪ·â™‚ïļEntrance fee: Thais 10 baht, foreigners 50 baht, or buy a combined ticket, Thais 40 baht, foreigners 220 baht.
