He created it specifically for his Italian wife, who was feeling homesick! Although he denied directly copying Italian villages, he never denied his deep love for Italian architectural art. He ingeniously integrated and repurposed some of the existing local buildings, using a patchwork style to deliberately create a fairytale-like sense of nostalgia. This approach is now considered by many to have profoundly influenced 20th-century postmodern architecture.
