The Kingdom of Norway (Norwegian: Kongeriket Norge or Kongeriket Noreg), commonly known as Norway, has its capital in Oslo and is located on the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula in Northern Europe. It borders Sweden to the east, Finland and Russia to the northeast, faces Denmark across the sea to the south, and is bordered by the Norwegian Sea to the west. The total area is 385,000 square kilometers (including territories such as the Svalbard archipelago and Jan Mayen), with a coastline of 28,953 kilometers (including fjords) . In the 9th century, Norway formed a unified kingdom. During the 9th to 11th centuries, the Kingdom of Norway entered its golden age. In the mid-14th century, it began to decline, and in 1397, it formed the Kalmar Union with Denmark and Sweden, ruled by Queen Margaret I of Denmark. In 1814, it was ceded to Sweden by Denmark. On June 7, 1905, it declared independence from the Swedish-Norwegian union and elected a Danish prince as king, who was known as Haakon VII. Norway remained neutral during World War I. During World War II, it was occupied by Germany. In May 1945, the German occupying forces announced their surrender, and Norway was liberated. Norway is a highly developed modern industrial country, and it is also one of the wealthiest and most livable countries in the world. Since the discovery of large amounts of offshore oil and natural gas in the 1970s, the oil and gas industry has dominated the Norwegian economy, with world-class technology and equipment for offshore oil and gas exploration and extraction.
