San Carlo theater

#springwander The San Carlo Theatre is the oldest opera house in Europe and is one of the three major opera houses in Italy, along with the Teatro Scala in Milan and the Opera House in Rome. It was built in 1737 by order of Carlo III, King of Naples and Sicily, but burned down in a fire in 1816. It was rebuilt in about 10 months and is still active as the pinnacle of the opera theatre. The biggest highlight is the ceiling painting with a mythological motif "Apollo, the sun god who introduces great poets to Minerva, the goddess of wisdom and battle".
