I just got back from Magome, and wow… I think I found one of my favorite places in Japan.
It’s this tiny old post town in the mountains — no cars, no chains, no noise. Just stone paths, wooden houses, a waterwheel, and insane views everywhere you look. It honestly felt like walking through a Ghibli scene.
I stayed the night in a little ryokan, had homemade soba, tried gohei mochi (kind of like sweet miso on grilled rice), and woke up to the sound of birds and… silence.
The best part? I walked the trail from Magome to Tsumago — it’s 8km through forests, rice fields, and sleepy villages. Took about 2.5 hours with lots of photo stops (of course). Super peaceful and not crowded at all.
If you’re tired of cities and want to slow down, Magome is seriously worth the detour.
📍Gifu Prefecture — easy to reach from Nakatsugawa Station.
