And the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum is truly an underrated gem in Okinawa! There's no reason not to go! It's a fantastic spot to escape the summer heat, gain some knowledge, admire beautiful architecture, and even get some great photos. What's not to love? About the Okinawa Prefectural Museum & Art Museum Architectural Marvel: Designed by architect Shuji Nose, its unique structure draws inspiration from ancient Ryukyu castles (Gusuku). Award-Winning Design: The building itself has received prestigious accolades, including the 2008 Japan Institute of Architects Award. Extensive Collections: As of 2017, the museum boasts approximately 94,000 artifacts, while the art museum holds around 3,700 pieces. Diverse Exhibits: The museum features five distinct exhibition rooms covering general history, natural history, archaeology, fine arts and crafts, and folklore. Artistic Focus: The art museum is divided into a collection area and a special exhibition area, primarily showcasing works by artists connected to Okinawa.
