Ancient Temple 'Butsugiji' in Shimane Prefecture

Located in Mihonoseki Town, Shimane Prefecture, Butsugiji Temple is a historic site near Miho Shrine. To reach it, you pass through the 'Aoisekidatami Street,' named for its blue hue that intensifies when wet with rain. The temple is believed to have been established approximately 1,200 years ago. It served as a temporary residence for Emperor Gotoba and Emperor Godaigo when they were exiled to Oki Island, making it a place of significant historical importance. Within the temple grounds, the Dainichido (Treasure Hall) houses the oldest Buddha statue in the San'in region, which is designated as an Important Cultural Property of Japan. Additionally, the temple is home to the grave of Kichisaburo, the lover of Yaoya Oshichi. After Oshichi was executed in Edo, Kichisaburo embarked on a pilgrimage to pray for her soul, a story that has been passed down through generations. The temple retains remnants of the Edo-period pilgrimage paths, preserving the atmosphere of that era.
