Wangu Tower

Wangu Tower is an iconic landmark in Lijiang, situated at the highest point of Lion Mountain in Lijiang Ancient City, adjacent to the Mu Family Mansion. In Dongba script, Wangu Tower means "Tower of Ten Thousand Generations." In the Naxi language, it is called "Wengu Lun," meaning a place to enjoy panoramic views from a high vantage point. Due to its similar pronunciation, it was named "Wangu Tower." "Wan" symbolizes the panoramic view of Lijiang Ancient City and its pastoral landscapes, the distant view of the eternal glaciers of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, and also represents Lijiang's restoration and reconstruction, leaving an everlasting legacy for generations to come. Wangu Tower is a five-eaved wooden pagoda structure. Its main body consists of sixteen pillars that extend from bottom to top, making it China's first all-wooden dougong (bracket) building with continuous pillars that are not connected. The tower has a square layout with four entrances, each guarded by a pair of stone lions with distinct poses.
