Visit the Drepung Monastery, one of the three major monasteries of the Garu Sect

Drepung Monastery is a Gelugpa monastery of Tibetan Buddhism in China. Together with Ganden Monastery and Sera Monastery, it is known as the three major monasteries in Lhasa. The original name was Auspicious Eternal Ten-Directions Zunsheng Prefecture, which means "Millet Pile Temple" or "Millet Accumulation Temple" in Tibetan. The full Tibetan name means "Auspicious Mian Mi Shifang Zunsheng Prefecture". It is located in a valley on the southern slope of Genpei Utse Mountain, about ten kilometers west of Lhasa. It was founded in 1416 by Jamyang Chokyi Tashi Bandan, a disciple of Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Yellow Sect. It is the largest temple in Tibetan Buddhism and the most prestigious temple in the Gelugpa sect.
