If you haven’t visited Kiyomizu-dera Temple, you’ll feel like you haven’t been to Kyoto. The last time I visited, it happened to be undergoing major renovations in preparation for the Olympics, so I didn’t have the chance to see this must-see check-in spot. When the renovations were completed in 2020, I was unable to visit again due to the pandemic. Kiyomizu-dera Temple is the oldest temple in Kyoto, with a history of more than 1,200 years. It covers an area of ​​130,000 square meters and is also listed as a World Cultural Heritage Site. Its unique architecture, historical background and beautiful scenery of all four seasons make Kiyomizu-dera Temple the most famous attraction in Kyoto. In addition, Kiyomizu-dera Temple holds a "Special Night Worship" in the fall, which lasts only two weeks. Therefore, in addition to foreign tourists, it also attracts many Japanese visitors. In the evening, there are still crowds of people along Omotesando. Stores have extended their business hours, and many vehicles are shuttling back and forth to pick up visitors, so the entire Omotesando is also very lively. When heading to Kiyomizu-dera Temple from Ninenzaka and Sannenzaka, the first attraction you see is the Niomon Gate. It is bright red and eye-catching and you definitely don’t want to miss it. If you follow the crowd, you will see the three-story pagoda, which is about 31 meters high and is the tallest three-story pagoda in Japan. Whether viewed from near or far, the architectural style and color of the triple pagoda are very eye-catching. The main hall of Kiyomizu Temple is the main hall of Kiyomizu Temple, and the protruding platform in front of the hall is the Kiyomizu stage. The main hall is built on a steep cliff, and all of its materials are historic wood, without a single nail or iron, making it very unique. There is a saying in Japan that goes "jump out from the Kiyomizu stage..." and the best view of the city can be seen from the stage. There are also other attractions such as Jishu Jinja Shrine and Otowa Falls. Daytime and nighttime visits are cheaper than many other shrines. In addition, it is a must-see landmark.
