#summervacay During an early morning run in Kyoto, my friend insisted we make a detour to Shimogamo Shrine (下鴨神社), and I'm so glad we did! This shrine often feels a bit overlooked compared to some of Kyoto's more famous spots, but it truly is an understated gem. Why It's Special: Tranquil Atmosphere: Located within a vast, ancient forest (Tadasu no Mori), Shimogamo Shrine offers a wonderfully serene and spiritual atmosphere. It's a fantastic place to find peace away from the bustling crowds. Historical Significance: As one of Kyoto's oldest and most important shrines, it's a UNESCO World Heritage site with a rich history dating back centuries. Beautiful Scenery: The approach through the forest, with its towering trees and flowing streams, is incredibly picturesque. It's especially refreshing on a warm day. Mitsui-ke Bettei (三井家別邸): Right at the entrance, you'll find the Mitsui-ke Bettei, a former residence of the Mitsui family. It's a perfect spot to step inside, enjoy some shade, and escape the heat for a moment, just as we did.
