As the head shrine of 12,000 Tenmangu shrines and Tenjin shrines nationwide, it has been a place where people have prayed for various wishes, including passing entrance exams and academic success. The site where the current Kitano Tenmangu Shrine stands has been considered a sacred place of purification and exorcism since ancient times, and it has a history of being built to appease the spirit of Sugawara no Michizane, who died tragically during the Heian period. In memory of Sugawara no Michizane, events such as the Tenjin Market, which is held on the 25th of each month, as well as the regular festival and Izuki Festival, are still held today. You can also encounter many reclining cows within the shrine grounds. It is said that stroking a reclining cow will bring you good fortune, and it is also called "Nadeushi." The "Ichiganjyo-shi Cow of One Wish Comes True," said to be the oldest in the temple grounds, has a slightly chipped head and a rounded body, due to people who prayed to Tenjin-sama for better intelligence by stroking its head.
