Tofukuji Temple

Located at the southeastern end of Higashiyama Ward in Kyoto, Tofukuji Temple is the oldest Zen temple in Japan and is listed as one of Kyoto's Five Great Zen Temples. It has been a popular pilgrimage site since ancient times. The temple complex consists of numerous wooden structures, primarily in black and white, giving it a solemn and dignified atmosphere. As you stroll through the Hojo Garden and along the corridors, you can appreciate the beauty of traditional Japanese gardens: square stones, square vegetation, and wave patterns made of tiles... From the Tsutenkyo Bridge to the garden, the valley below the bridge is filled with dense yellow and green maple leaves, creating a pleasing sight. Tofukuji's maple leaves are famous far and wide, and one can imagine the mountains covered in vibrant red during the autumn season. Among the existing Zen temple gates in Japan, the oldest is the Sanmon Gate, which is designated as a national treasure. The main hall, Zen hall, and the Toji toilet are all important cultural assets. Tofukuji Temple is worth savoring and appreciating slowly.
