Small Town Budget For The Big City Life, Top Tips To Budget In Kuala Lumpur

Kuala Lumpur is an overlooked gem in southeast Asia and doesn’t get enough praise for how liveable the city is, it has fantastic food, shopping, landmarks and culture - and it can be done on a very reasonable budget! ⭐️ Airport - The Airport is very far out of town, over an hour in the car. Taxis are expensive and unreliable, so book via grab or use the Airport link train. The train is cheap but slow, make sure you plan your trip ahead of time to make time for your flight. ⭐️Flights - Airasia one of the worlds biggest low cost airlines has it’s main base in Kuala Lumpur, so if you are already in Asia it’s one of the cheapest places to fly too especially if you just have a carry on bag! ⭐️Hotels - As usual with Asia lots of western hotels here are expensive and cater mainly to higher budget travelers. However Kuala Lumpur has seen a boom in serviced apartments recently, both my trips were in these. You get a beautiful, open plan apartment with a full kitchen and bathroom and it’s cheaper than a hotel. You obviously miss the breakfast and food options, but you do get housekeeping and most of them will have a rooftop pool / gym. ⭐️Transport - As with most south east Asian cities the transport network is good but not amazing - the MTR in Kuala Lumpur is run by different companies and can be quite confusing. I tried to keep cash on me for tickets and tried to get as close to destinations as possible then walk. Grab is available in KL but traffic can be very bad and makes taxis inefficient. ⭐️Food - I found food very reasonable in Kuala Lumpur and was surprised by how many western chains there are in the city, so it is easy to get full meals at a decent price. There are also lots of street vendors, food markets and a huge food scene in china town if you really want to save money! Also convenience stores are everywhere and are great for water, snacks and coffee. ICC Pudu hawker market was my favorite food stop and ended up back there a few times! ⭐️Malls - I found I used the malls a lot for the toilet, air conditioning and wifi - they are a great pit stop to refresh yourself and get your bearings for your next area. Overall the biggest tip for KL is to plan your day before you head out, especially planning transport and food options. If you go out unprepared you can waste a lot of time / money. #cheaptravel #budget #malaysia #kualalumpur #city #travel #myitinerary #citydaytours #localfood #thingstodo
