Malaysian Food Through Thai Eyes – 2 Weeks of Delicious Discoveries

I stayed in Malaysia for two weeks, and during that time, my Malaysian boyfriend and local friends made it their mission to introduce me to as many different kinds of local food as possible—and wow, what a journey it was! As a Thai person, I thought I was already used to bold flavors, but Malaysian cuisine surprised me in the best way. The mix of Malay, Chinese, and Indian influences makes every meal unique, rich, and full of character. I tried Nasi Lemak (love the sambal!), Char Kway Teow, Roti Canai with Teh Tarik, Laksa, Hainanese Chicken Rice, and so much more. The spices are different from Thai food—not too spicy, but very aromatic and flavorful. I really enjoyed how the dishes are often served with lots of sauces and side elements, so you get to mix and match. One thing I noticed is that Malaysians love rich, creamy textures, especially in curries and gravies, and they’re really generous with portions! I also loved the street food culture—very casual but full of amazing flavors. Eating at hawker stalls and local kopitiams made the experience feel even more authentic. If I had to choose favorites, I’d say: Best breakfast: Kaya bread+ steam egg + Teh Tarik Most surprising: Assam Laksa (very different from Thai-style!) Most comforting: Nasi Ayam (Hainanese Chicken Rice)💯💯💯💯 Malaysian food gave me a new appreciation for how diverse and creative Southeast Asian cuisine can be. It's not just about flavor, it's about culture, warmth, and sharing good food with good people. I'm definitely going back for more!
