“A Journey Through Time: Living the Traditions at Mari Mari Cultural Village”

#kotakinabalutrip Visiting the Mari Mari Cultural Village in Sabah was one of the most enriching and interactive cultural experiences I’ve ever had. Tucked away in a lush rainforest just outside of Kota Kinabalu, the village offers a deep and meaningful glimpse into the traditional lifestyles of Sabah’s indigenous tribes. From the very beginning, the experience felt immersive. Our guide was warm, knowledgeable, and incredibly engaging, walking us through the different tribal houses representing five major ethnic groups: the Dusun, Rungus, Lundayeh, Bajau, and Murut. Each stop wasn’t just a visual showcase—it was hands-on. We learned how to make traditional rice wine, watched how fire was started with bamboo, tried out local musical instruments, and even tested out a blowpipe! The performances were vibrant and energetic, especially the Murut bamboo trampoline dance, which had the whole group cheering. The storytelling, the costumes, the music—all came together to bring the culture to life in a way that felt respectful, entertaining, and heartfelt. The tour ended with a delicious local meal, served in a rustic open-air setting, featuring traditional Sabah dishes. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and comforting. What I appreciated most was how genuine and welcoming the experience felt. It wasn’t a commercialized “tourist trap,” but rather a cultural sharing platform where visitors can learn, connect, and respect the rich heritage of Sabah. If you’re visiting Sabah and want something beyond the beaches and mountains, Mari Mari Cultural Village is a must. It’s a chance to step into history, meet the people who carry it forward, and come away with a deeper appreciation for Borneo’s indigenous soul.
