Kochi Castle: Twelve Existing Towers

#Furitabi A typical flatland castle in the center of Kochi City. A historic castle with 240,000 koku of land in Tosa, whose foundations were laid by Yamauchi Kazutoyo, the first lord of the Tosa domain, and his wife Chiyo. Yamauchi Kazutoyo, who was bestowed the entire Tosa province by Tokugawa Ieyasu for his achievements in the Battle of Sekigahara, began construction of a new castle in 1601 and developed it. The three-story, six-storey castle tower and Otemon Gate are designated as important cultural properties of Japan. It is one of the 12 remaining wooden castle towers in Japan, and has survived numerous crises, including fires, earthquakes, the nationwide abandonment of castles due to the Meiji Restoration, and the Pacific War, and has remained in its original form to this day. In the park, you can also find statues of Kazutoyo's wife Chiyo, who was famous for her supportive wife, and Itagaki Taisuke.
