Basantapur Durbar square

Kathmandu Durbar Square, also known as Basantapur Durbar and Hanuman Dhoka, is a captivating historical landmark in the heart of Kathmandu. Its intricate wood carvings and rich history never fail to impress visitors. Dating back to the Licchavi period (4th to 8th centuries AD), the square has witnessed centuries of expansion and development, notably under King Pratap Malla in the 17th century. Today, it stands as a testament to Nepal's architectural heritage, boasting a remarkable concentration of palaces, courtyards, and temples. Nicknamed "the Museum of Temples," the square houses over 50 temples, including the revered Taleju Bhawani temple, dedicated to the titular deity. The Durbar itself is divided into two courtyards: the outer courtyard, featuring the Kasthamandap, Kumari Ghar, and Shiva-Parvati Temple, and the inner courtyard, encompassing Hanuman Dhoka and the main palace. Several floors within the palace have been transformed into museums, showcasing the legacy of three generations of Shah kings of Nepal.
