Nanxun Ancient Town, nestled in Nanxun District, Huzhou City, Zhejiang Province, on the shores of Taihu Lake, is one of the six ancient towns of Jiangnan. Its history dates back to the Southern Song Dynasty's Chunyou reign (1241-1252). Situated along the Xunxi River, it attracted numerous merchants and gradually developed into a bustling market town, hence the name "Nanxun." During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Nanxun flourished through its silk industry and silk trade, becoming a prominent commercial center. Established during the Southern Song Dynasty, Nanxun's convenient waterway access made it a hub for commerce and trade. The Ming and Qing dynasties witnessed the rise of wealthy merchant families in Nanxun due to the booming silk industry. These families were often referred to by nicknames like "Four Elephants, Eight Bulls, and Seventy-Two Golden Dogs," with animal sizes representing their wealth (e.g., "Four Elephants" referred to families with assets exceeding ten million taels of silver). In modern times, Nanxun merchants facilitated cultural exchange between China and the West, resulting in the construction of many buildings blending Chinese and Western architectural styles, such as the Zhang Shiming Former Residence and the Liu's Stepped House. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Nanxun was a central hub for the Jiangnan silk trade, with Husi (Jili silk) exported overseas. Wealthy merchants supported education and established libraries (like the Jiayetang Library), preserving a vast collection of ancient books. The town's architecture, a fusion of Jiangnan water town style and Western elements, showcases the open and prosperous character of a modern commercial port. In spring, Nanxun's canals are lined with weeping willows, their reflections mirroring the white walls and black tiles of the houses. Wupeng boats glide gently along the waterways. The banks are adorned with blooming wintersweet, wisteria, and azaleas, with the peach blossoms in front of Baijian Lou particularly enchanting against the backdrop of ancient architecture. While the lotus pond at Xiaolianzhuang hasn't yet reached its summer splendor, the pavilions, zigzag bridges, and lush greenery offer a unique charm in spring. When spring rain falls, the cobblestone streets shimmer, resembling a traditional Chinese ink painting. Visitors can enjoy boat rides to admire the spring scenery, savor seasonal wild vegetables (like shepherd's purse and Chinese toon), and explore the Silk Guild Hall to experience the echoes of history. Nanxun in spring exudes a tranquility that follows the bustling trade season, while embracing the vibrant charm of Jiangnan.
