"Economy and Trade" Special Exhibition

The Hong Kong Museum of History's special exhibition "Economy and Trade" tells the story of how Hong Kong gradually developed into a transshipment hub for Sino-foreign trade after the Second Opium War, which gave rise to heavy industries such as shipbuilding and ship repair, attracting a large amount of foreign capital investment. As for Chinese-owned enterprises, they mainly produce goods needed locally. The silver dollar notes issued by the Banque de l'Indochine in Hong Kong in 1845 and the first batch of subsidiary coins issued in 1863. Both marked the birth of the Hong Kong dollar.
