Mai Po and Tsim Bei Tsui are wetland treasures in the northwest of Hong Kong's New Territories, boasting rich ecology and unique landscapes, perfect for birdwatching, walks, and nature exploration. The Mai Po Nature Reserve, located in the northwest of Yuen Long District, is an internationally renowned wetland reserve, a Ramsar Convention protected area. It features vast mangrove forests, fishponds, and mudflats, serving as an important habitat for migratory birds. Every winter, it attracts large numbers of rare birds such as herons and black-faced spoonbills, making it a paradise for birdwatchers. Tsim Bei Tsui, located west of Mai Po and east of Lau Fau Shan, adjacent to Tin Shui Wai, was originally named "Turtle Hill" because of its turtle-like shape. This area boasts wetlands, fishponds, and mangroves, offering a tranquil landscape and has been designated a Site of Special Scientific Value. Climbing Turtle Hill takes only about five minutes; the summit features a pavilion and elevation markers, offering panoramic views of Deep Bay and the skyscrapers of Shenzhen, creating a striking contrast. The coastal trail is suitable for cycling or walking, and is particularly magnificent at sunset. This area is easily accessible by minibus from Yuen Long or Tin Shui Wai, or by bicycle. It is a secluded spot that combines natural ecology with border charm. (A B C)
