DRAGON'S BACK

The final section of the Hong Kong Trail is a winding trail on the Dragon's Back ridge which is widely lauded as one of the best urban hikes in Hong Kong. Despite its catchy name, Dragon's Back has a recreational platform near its summit that provides spectacular views of the southern region of Hong Kong Island and its coastline. Right at the end of the trail is Big Wave Bay. You can swim or surf to complete this hiking activity in a relaxed manner. From Sheik O Road, you will first walk through a leafy path to a section of the Hong Kong Trail. After a minute of walking, the path opens to the sky as you climb up. After 20 minutes or so, you'll arrive at Shek O Peninsula Viewing Point with views of Shek O Beach at the foot of the hill, as well as the two islands off the Shek O Peninsula. Despite being open and exposed, the platform at the end of Shek O Peak (284 m) is the best place to get a panoramic view of the peninsula's coastline. As you turn around to observe the winding paths, you'll finally understand why the name Dragon's Back deserves it. Stay on the bumpy ridge to find “dragons” as you climb. Stop at Dragon's Back Hike Viewing Point for panoramic views of Tai Tam Bay west of the Shek O Peninsula. On a clear day, even Lamma Island in southwest Hong Kong Island is visible from the deck. After crossing the ridge, you'll arrive at Pottinger Gap. Here you will see Chai Wan high-rise buildings with wooded landscapes. After passing through a pavilion, you will pass steep descents on cobblestones and uneven dirt roads. The very end of the trail is very shady and sometimes slippery. Once you get off the trail and past the locals' houses, a beach popular with surfers awaits.
