Hupao Temple, originally called Daci Dinghui Zen Temple, is located at the foot of Daci Mountain in the southwest of Hangzhou city, close to West Lake, and was founded in the fourteenth year of the Yuanhe period of the Tang Dynasty (819 AD). The origin of the temple's name is quite legendary. It is said that during a severe drought, the high monk Huan Zhong and his disciple Xing Kong were guided in a dream by a divine figure to draw spring water from Nanyue, hence the name 'Hupao' or 'Tiger Running'. The Hongyi Master Memorial Hall in Hangzhou Hupao, located at No. 39 Hupao Road in Xihu District, Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, within Hupao Park, is a memorial museum dedicated to the modern Chinese cultural figure Li Shutong, also known as Master Hongyi. Li Shutong, also known by the names Li Xishuang, Li An, Li Liang, styled Wentai, with the childhood name Chengxi, academic name Guanghou, courtesy name Xishuang, and alternative name Shu Tong, was a famous musician, art educator, calligrapher, and theater activist in modern Chinese history, and also one of the pioneers of Chinese spoken drama.
