It was built by investment and cooperation between Mr. Henry Fok and the Guangdong Provincial Government. It was designed by famous Chinese architectural designers She Junnan and Mo Bozhi. The hotel opened in 1983 and is the first Sino-foreign five-star hotel in China. The White Swan Hotel was once ranked first in the list of the top 100 and top 50 hotels in the country. The building itself has been recognized as a cultural relic and is a landmark in Shamian and along the Pearl River. The garden landscape "Hometown Water" in the hotel is also very distinctive and is a popular tourist check-in spot.
