German aviation hub Frankfurt

Frankfurt, whose official name is Frankfurt am Main, is very important because there is also a Frankfurt in Brandenburg, which borders Poland in eastern Germany. Its full name is Frankfurt am Oder. Frankfurt am Main is the most populous city in the German state of Hesse. As of December 31, 2019, it had 763,380 inhabitants, making it the fifth most populous city in Germany. Frankfurt was once a city-state, the Free City of Frankfurt for nearly five centuries, and was one of the most important cities in the Holy Roman Empire, the site of the imperial coronation; it lost sovereignty when the empire collapsed in 1806, regained it in 1815, and then was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866, although it was neutral at the time. It has been part of the state of Hesse since 1945. Frankfurt is culturally, ethnically and religiously diverse, with half of its population and most of its young people having an immigrant background. A quarter of the population is made up of foreigners, including many expatriates. As Germany's largest aviation hub, most intercontinental flights to Germany fly to Frankfurt, followed by Munich.
