When I turned the corner and saw that Starbucks, I was in a daze, as if I had traveled through a time rift - under the palm leaf-woven dome, the modern aroma of coffee seeped through the earthen walls from 600 years ago. Holding a date macchiato, I walked up to the terrace and watched the white shadow of a sailboat in the distance cut through the rose-gold river, the ripples in my cup gently colliding with the reflection of Dubai. Walking on the stone road polished by time, I felt like I was stepping into the folds of time. The mottled cracks on the ochre mud walls were like the wrinkles on the back of an old Arab sheikh's hand, hiding the unfinished chapters of One Thousand and One Nights. You can find many good things in the Arab market. The wooden lattice windows of the spice shop let in the slanting sun, and the smoke entwined with the dust of saffron flickered in the air. When the shopkeeper put a handful of golden dates in my palm, I remembered that you can bargain here.
