Straight up I'd like to say that if you can, please save a week or so for this region. I came pretty unplanned and unaware for 3 days. While it may sound plenty. But trust me this is my favourite nature place in Germany. And it deserves more time for there is plenty to see. The town of Berchtesgaden does have some hotels. You could always look for something that suits you budget or even in the nearby towns.
While the Berchtesgaden national park is predominantly what interests tourists who come to this region..But that is not one thing. It has the most stunning lake with activities. The nearby villages, churches and view points, hikes etc. That's what i mean when i say it will require more time.
So it was 3 of us and with a car we set out to explore the surroundings and the national park area. This was Friday and we had two more days for Berchtesgaden. Even driving around felt like sightseeing. The scenery was very pretty. Since it was a weekend, plenty of German tourists on weekend trips were driving around heading to the various restaurants, Hitler’s Eagle Nest, hiking trails, etc.
One of the best things to do is to simply walk around and enjoy the charming, old town ambiance. But in terms of historical landmarks, there is the Berchtesgaden Royal Castle, the royal residence of the Wittelsbach family. There is the Church of St. Peter and St. John the Baptist. In summary with obersalzburg, the national park and salt mines. We made evey minute spent in this area worth it.
