Travel Guide to Aswan, Egypt: What to See & Know

#citypassguide #aswan #egypt Aswan is one of the most culturally rich and geographically unique destinations in Egypt. It’s located in the far south of the country, near the Sudanese border, and offers a slower, more peaceful vibe compared to Cairo or Luxor. 🏞 Highlights of Aswan * Aswan High Dam & Friendship Monument: Egypt’s only dam, built with Soviet support in the 1970s. The dam caused the Nile’s water level to rise, leading to the relocation of major temples like Abu Simbel and Philae. The monument next to the dam symbolizes Egyptian-Soviet friendship. * Abu Simbel Temples: A must-see, located 4 hours south of Aswan. Built by Ramses II, the temples were moved in the 1960s to avoid submersion after the dam’s construction. The site features colossal statues and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. * Philae Temple: Dedicated to the goddess Isis. Like Abu Simbel, it was relocated to avoid flooding. You need both a temple ticket and a boat ride, which can be pricey, but negotiable. I paid 250 EGP as a solo traveler. * Nubian Villages: Known for their colorful homes and pet crocodiles. You can enjoy tea and even take photos with the crocodiles. A roundtrip taxi with 1-hour wait cost me 500 EGP. * Elephantine Island: Accessible by free boats, home to ancient ruins and local culture. I visited the island to enjoy a drink at King Jamaica Café, a great chill spot. 🚍 Transportation Tips * From Luxor to Aswan: Minibuses are available but may avoid foreign passengers unless extra money is offered (max 300 EGP recommended). Some travelers stop at Edfu Temple first, then continue to Aswan to save on costs. * To Abu Simbel: Depart from the main Aswan minibus terminal. No fixed schedule — buses leave when full. 🛳 Optional Experiences * Cruise from Aswan to Luxor: Trips range from 2–7 days. Short cruises cover basic transport and meals, while longer ones include guided temple visits. * Felucca Ride: Traditional Egyptian sailboats on the Nile — a relaxing way to enjoy sunset views. * Unfinished Obelisk: A massive obelisk left incomplete due to cracking — it would’ve been the largest in ancient Egypt. #citypassguide
