The Ark Lodge ★★★

"My wife and I had a lovely couple of days at The Ark Lodge, and we would happily recommend this unique and enchanting experience to anyone interested in Kenyan wildlife and an easy way to observe animals at close proximity. The hotel itself is wonderfully quirky in design, overlooking a watering hole that is regularly visited by a range of animals, including elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, and some truly MASSIVE warthogs! Sitting with a beer and quietly watching the animals drink from the watering hole is an experience that will live long in the memory. It was also nice to have access to the nearby Aberdare Country Club for additional hospitality, including the opportunity to swim in the pool and use the gym. The nature walk there was also very enjoyable. The only real downside was the size and simplicity of the rooms, along with the limited amenities and space. We were also located fairly close to the generator, which meant there was some noise at night. Thankfully, with days spent exploring the park, earplugs at the ready, and plenty of wildlife to watch, this wasn’t a major issue for us. The Ark Lodge is ideal for those wanting a stop-off on the way north in Kenya, or as part of a longer trip exploring the country. While I’m not sure whether we will return in the future, we would still recommend it for its unique décor, pleasant staff, and the unbelievable wildlife on display."

"FK Spa Resort holds great potential due to its beautiful location and picturesque surroundings. Having stayed here before, I can say the food and service remain commendable, with staff going out of their way to ensure a pleasant dining experience. However, my recent stay left much to be desired, as the property appears to have taken a step backward in terms of maintenance and guest comfort. The showers in the executive room were broken, with fittings coming off the wall and an unnecessarily complex setup of knobs that didn’t work properly. A simple, functional shower would have been much better. The pillows were uncomfortable, and we noticed hanging electric wires and misplaced sockets in the room, highlighting a lack of attention to detail. It’s clear the hotel needs significant refurbishment to ensure quality and safety, rather than focusing on extensions. To add to the discomfort, a disco located by the hotel gate played loud music until the early hours of the morning. This made it impossible to relax or get a good night's sleep, which is the primary expectation when staying at a hotel. While it’s understandable that businesses aim to maximize revenue, compromising guest comfort in this way is counterproductive and could drive loyal customers away. It’s evident that FK Spa Resort requires thoughtful upgrades and a more guest-centric approach. A professional interior designer could breathe new life into the property, ensuring functional and appealing spaces. The house managers also need to focus on attention to detail, prioritizing maintenance and guest experience. This resort has immense potential, but without significant improvements, it’s unlikely I will return. A stay should be restful and enjoyable, not an exercise in enduring discomfort. I hope the management takes this feedback as an opportunity to refine and enhance what could be a truly exceptional destination."
