Booking this hotel at a non-refundable rate was the worst decision of my trip to Merida. I am pregnant and feared for my health and my developing baby’s while there, as the air quality inside the room smelled terribly musty and of insecticide. The bathroom had what looked like black mold growth on the floor next to the toilet (picture attached). The walls inside the bathroom and all around the room, including right behind the bed are bubbled up, which can be indicative of mold/ water damage (pictures attached). Given it’s five-star rating, I expected a room with safe air quality, free of mold and pests— the cleaning staff have a bottle of insecticide spray on their cleaning cart literally right next to the clean towels! During our stay, 100% of the staff we met were men, I asked if any women work there and they said a woman was working in the kitchen (we did not see the kitchen). While we had breakfast in the mornings, we were the only ones there surrounded by onlooking— albeit helpful— men. The lack of women and loneliness of the atmosphere made me personally feel uncomfortable and I looked forward to not spending time at the hotel, not even sleeping, as I feared for my developing baby’s health. Sleeping with the windows open was not an option as some are closed shut with glass, there are no window screens and mosquitoes are rampant in the evenings. Overall, this hotel felt like a health hazard and an awkward place to stay during my vacation.
