There was construction going on at the property but it was very clear that there was a direct effort to ensure that the construction noice didn't interfere with the guests. We hardly knew that there was construction going on during our stay. There was a room credit due to the construction that we could use for breakfast and the pool. This offereing really made it clear that The Montage understood that the construction wasn't ideal and the offering of credits was more than generous. The property was amazing and the snorkeling was incredible. We made some fantastic memories here as this was one of the best overall family vacations that we've ever had. All of the staff was amazing but special shout out to Scott at the consierge desk and the guys at the valet station.

Our stay at Montage Kapalua Bay was nothing short of spectacular, and we are already planning our return! From the moment we arrived, the service was impeccable, and every staff member we encountered went above and beyond to make our trip unforgettable. Special shoutouts to Jeremy in the bar and restaurant, who brought warmth and incredible energy to every interaction. His drink recommendations and attention to detail truly elevated our dining experience. Eric, the poolside server, was phenomenal—always friendly, attentive, and ensuring we were well taken care of. Stacy in guest services was a delight, providing seamless assistance with everything we needed. And Lisa? She makes the best coffee we’ve ever had! She turned every morning into the perfect start to our day. The valet and hotel drivers deserve major recognition as well. They were consistently friendly, polite, and prompt. Every time we called for the hotel car, it arrived with a smile, and we never had to wait. Housekeeping was equally outstanding—thorough, efficient, and always with a kind word. One standout moment was when Sally and the chef graciously accommodated our family of nine with a custom grill pack on incredibly short notice, even on a day when he was managing a large wedding. The food was phenomenal, and his flexibility and professionalism were greatly appreciated. The in-room dining team also exceeded expectations, though I regret not catching the name of the fantastic attendants who took such great care of us. The Cliff House experience was another highlight—breathtaking views, the perfect sunset, and sipping Veuve as we watched whales from the balcony was a memory we’ll treasure forever. While everything was world-class, I do have one suggestion: implementing a no-holding-chairs policy at the pool. It was frustrating to walk around with nowhere to sit while so many chairs were empty but “reserved.” At a luxury property like this, guests should always feel they have access to seating. Finally, though there was a miscommunication with our cabana rental on the first day, Montage more than made it right for us. Their exceptional customer service ensured we left with nothing but glowing memories. Thank you to the Montage Kapalua Bay team for an unforgettable vacation. You’ve set the bar high for luxury and hospitality!

The alluring tranquil ambience left me feeling fully rejuvenated! I enjoyed an amazing meal at the Cane &Canoe restaurant, where I experienced 5 star service from a kind and attentive server named Matthew. His blend of wit, humor and expertise profoundly shaped my experience. The staff on all fronts of the Montage hotel were warm and accommodating! Thank you!

We had a great stay at the Montage with 9 people - 4 adults and 5 kids ages 11-16. We booked our room directly through a villa owner and had a great bunk room for all the kids and 2 master suites. Having a laundry room and full kitchen in the villa was amazing! The property is lovely and the staff were amazing. We were there over Christmas break and had to reserve chairs at 7am everyday, but I think that is only for that week. The staff said they’ve never seen it that busy before. The pools are amazing - the kids had a blast. The staff there is very low-key and really give the kids free rein. The water is heated to 79 so not too hot and still refreshing when you jump in. And the pools don’t close so you can swim any time of day, which the kids loved. There are lots of waitstaff at the pool and we had plenty of drinks and lunch at the pool everyday. Kelsey and Anu were wonderful servers at the pool. The beach is about a 5-7 minute walk. Our kids who usually love to boogie board and snorkel and be in the ocean didn’t want to go to it. It’s very rocky and not sand once you get in the water. If you want a beach vacation this is not the place. Every night the adults went to the Hideaway for cocktails after dinner and loved the vibe there. It’s also a great spot for a casual dinner - we ate here one night and it was good. Jeremy the bartender took very good care of us - I don’t think I’ve ever seen another person work as hard as he did that week. We ate off-property every night except 1 night at Cane and Canoe and 1 night for room service. We did not have a good experience at Cane and Canoe for dinner, but the F&B Manager apologized and went out of his way to make it right. Our breakfast at Cane and Canoe was decent. Would highly-recommend Montage for a family vacation. I wouldn’t pick it for a couple’s trip/honeymoon since it’s more family-focused, but that may just because we were there during Christmas and there were 7 million kids. The staff, the pool, the views, and the villa accommodations make it a great family spot. Also, the amount of off-property dining within 10 minutes (car) is amazing. We will definitely be back.

Beautiful property, underwhelming service Montage Kapalua Bay is undeniably beautiful. The location is breathtaking, the rooms are spacious and luxurious, and the beach and pool areas are world-class. On aesthetics and facilities alone, it checks every box for a five-star resort. But where it truly falls short — and quite noticeably — is in the level of service. When you choose Montage, especially at this price point, you expect the caliber of hospitality you’d find at a Four Seasons. Unfortunately, that expectation was not met. Throughout our stay, we experienced several service missteps that left us feeling like just another room number rather than valued guests. One recurring issue was that the service felt transactional — as though staff were primarily motivated by tips, rather than a genuine desire to create a memorable guest experience. True five-star hospitality begins with consistent, proactive care; tips should follow naturally, not be the driver of attentiveness. This reflects a deeper problem: a lack of unified service culture. Leadership needs to establish and enforce high standards across the board — not leave it to a few individuals to carry the weight. A few specific examples: • Poolside Service: One afternoon around 5 PM, I asked for a towel for a lounge chair. The staff member told me they were completely out. Moments later, I spotted a large stack of towels nearby and had to help myself. There was no follow-up or attempt to assist — which felt dismissive. • Valet Service: The valet experience was inconsistent. Some team members were warm, courteous, and helpful with luggage. Others simply retrieved the car without any greeting or assistance. In a luxury setting, that lack of consistency is jarring. • Room Service & Phone Response: One evening, we attempted to order room service — and tried calling multiple times over 90 minutes with no answer. Eventually, we contacted the valet and asked them to reach a manager. Only then did we receive a callback. Whether this was a staffing or technical issue, it’s something that must be urgently addressed at a property aspiring to five-star status. One bright spot during our stay was at the Cane & Canoe lounge. On Friday, June 27, we were served by someone who truly embodied the spirit of hospitality — warm, attentive, and sincere. He didn’t feel like someone working for a tip — he felt like someone who genuinely cared about giving guests a great experience. If his approach could be reflected across the staff, this resort would truly be world-class. In summary: If you’re coming for the views, the accommodations, and the resort grounds alone — you’ll be very impressed. But if you value consistent, high-level service as part of your luxury stay, you may be left disappointed. In our experience, alternatives like the Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton Maui, or Fairmont Orchid on the Big Island have delivered stronger, more reliable service. A delightful stay, overflowing with privacy and luxury. This is hands down the best option on this part of the island. Our family travels frequently, and it's rare for a hotel to truly impress us—until now. Posting reviews isn't usually our thing, but the satisfaction we experienced here absolutely deserves an honorable mention.

I have been to this resort now 3 times. The first 2 times were amazing and couldn’t have been any better of an experience all around ) (2016 & 2019). My family and I came back in 2025 and we were surprised that the pool staff were so unfriendly. It really does change your experience. They seemed rude and annoyed everyday we were there - especially the woman who works at the pool bar near the adult pool.

Outstanding resort. It seems like there is a renovation in place and you can tell that it is due for one. It’s not outdated but it could use a refreshed look. Residence are in need of some updating, the pool had a bunch of tiles missing. Much more intimate vibe than Weilea but there also is not much to do without taking a trip to Whalers village area. The staff was top notch. The activities were fantastic. Although the breakfast was mediocre, Cane and Canoe was a solid 10. Better than Merrimans in my opinion. The only improvement I would suggest is more dining options for lunch and there were very little cocktail options s for breakfast. Kapalua bay was our favorite beach so far on our Maui trip. Swam with the sea turtles and a huge one even swam onto shore for a bit

Resort location is wonderful, the paintbox program is wonderful and quality of food fantastic. Spa is wonderful. Variety of dining options/food & concierge service can greatly improve. Resort also feels slightly dated. Service across the board (other than valet & spa) is extremely slow. Concierge also does not go out of the way to enhance your stay as we visited for a week in a prime 3 bedroom ocean view residence we expected a bit more in service & hospitality

UNDER CONSTRUCTION - The hotel is under construction and the beach club area is out of service, and the fact that there is ongoing construction was not disclosed via the Montage website or via Fine Hotels & Resorts that we booked through (and still isn’t disclosed as of the date of this post). It's a big eyesore with construction tarping over the entirety of one building, visible from the rooms, pool and beach. We also heard from a local that this hotel is going to be under construction for more than a year as they are doing the reno one building at a time. We checked in for a 4 night stay after staying at The Ritz Carlton Kapalua next door. On our arrival day, we called the hotel to confirm when our room would be ready and to see if our Fine Hotels & Resorts upgrade (through AmEx) was available (we had booked an Ocean View 2 Bedroom Residence), and the front desk confirmed we had been upgraded to a Grand Residence 3 bedroom. When we arrived they pretended like the upgrade conversation never happened, and they took us to a room with a very limited view of the ocean that was directly above the bar, that primarily had a view of trees and the construction in Building 1 (this room should be sold as garden view). The manager on duty lied to my wife and said that nobody told her she was upgraded. They made us wait around for 2 hours with our kids hungry and tired, and we missed our dinner reservation, all for them to tell us there was nothing they could do to help. We have stayed at this hotel 6 times since 2017, and never experienced such bad service or disappointment in our room. We won’t make the mistake again. We had great service and professionalism at The Ritz Carlton next door, and you can enjoy the same restaurants and beaches. Do yourself a favor and just stay next door (or on another island) where they are professional and courteous, and don’t fail to disclose big things like renovations (which they are in need of, as the facilities are getting tired and the restaurant options not up to snuff for what they are charging for rooms. Today is our last day after spending 10 here. The accommodations are amazing. Room is clean, comfortable and well supplied. Bed is super comfortable. Service is amazing all around - we lacked for nothing. The only complaint - there is MAJOR construction in progress, with one tower completely wrapped in tarps. On the other side, there is a remodel of a unit in progress. The entire time we have been here has been hammering and tile saw. It is LOUD! We just finished a major renovation at home, and are in the middle of a development that has had heavy construction for 6 days a week for the last year. We were specifically looking forward to being away from construction noise. For the money we spent to be here, the fact that it wasn’t disclosed anywhere is very disappointing. We were planning to rebook but will definitely discuss the renos with concierge prior. They were just out here looking at samples of pool tile also - and judging from the state of the pools and update is coming on those as well. Also keeping an eye on how the recent change in ownership will affect the Montage. After years of staying in VRBOs here, we are enjoying the splurge on the luxury and hope that it doesn’t change to more Holiday Inn accommodations. Finally, swim in the pool that connects with the one closest to ocean at your own risk. Despite common sense AND signage, we saw one family consistently swimming with littles without swim diapers. Get your chairs early in the adult more secluded areas or if you end up down at that deck, maybe don’t swim in that pool. Obviously not the hotels fault but just beware.

The best luxury hotel experience we ever had. From the first class arrival to the amazing views and service, the Montage is a real 5 star experience. Our only regret was leaving and going to Wailea for the rest of our trip. Should have stayed the entire time at the Montage.

We are currently staying at the Montage Kapalua bay. Overall the hotel is beautiful. The main point of this review is the seating issue at the pool. Guests claim pool chairs at 8am but do not start using them until 11 or not at all- making it impossible for other families to enjoy sitting by the pool. The hotel management is not willing to enforce a rule where chairs cannot be held in advance. So basically while we are paying an exorbitant amount of money to stay at this hotel we are asked to act like we are at a 3 star all inclusive Caribbean getaway, along with needing to set an alarm while on vacation just to secure chairs at the pool. We have stayed at numerous luxury hotels where the management has handled this issue with more grace.
