Hotel Magenta

I am currently staying at this hotel, booked 5 nights due to a conference in the city but I am sorry to say I regret it and cannot recommend it to solo travellers. - Very small room and bed. Feels like a poor hostelroom. -poor ventilation and aircon - No view, cannot see the sky and tell what weather it is. Windows open to a dirty and messy backyard/stone walls. - Poor cleaning - Bed cover with lots of old stains - Dirty walls and doors - No suitable/comfortable place to work on computer + one of the receptionists when I arrived was nice and friendly as well as the breakfast staff + the bathroom is big + there is yoghurt, fresh strawberries and good cappuccino at breakfast. + location is good, close to central station The double rooms look better in pictures but when I asked for another room the receptionist just told me there was nothing else available and did not even ask why I wanted to change. There are so many other hotels in this city, in every street. I would recommend you to choose any of those!

This is a family-run hotel a short walk from the S. M. Novella railway station, the historic centre of Florence, and quite near to the Ponte Vecchio. It's an ideal base for visiting Florence, particularly as the organised day-trips by tour companies start and end at the railway station, a real bonus when some start just after 7am. The staff are all very friendly and helpful, and really made us feel welcome. Our room was 302, and was very clean and comfortable, particularly the bed, the best sleep on a two-week trip to several locations across Italy. Breakfast was good and ideal for a day of walking. Our only issue was other guests, two nights sharing the same floor as some Americans who kept their doors open so that they could shout conversations to each other across the corridor, came in late whooping and slamming doors, and were generally a nuisance to be nearby to. The staff were quick to advise them to keep the noise down whenever they heard them. That aside, we enjoyed our stay at the Hotel Magenta and it has all that you need for a city break in Florence.

Let me start by saying that the reviews on this hotel are quite flattering & positive, but that was not our experience at all. Travelling with friends for 12 days throughout Italy, this was, by far, the worst hotel we stayed in. The stench, and I mean stench, emanating in our room (Room 106 on the 1st floor) was quite sickening. After complaining, more than once, we were provided with an air purifier for the remainder of our stay, which was noisy at night and basically only masked the smell, & meant we did not really sleep well. We purchased our own air freshener from a local supermarket. We were very glad to leave! Whilst the location is quite close to the station, & supposed to be located "in the most elegant area of the city", that would depend on which way you approach the hotel. From the station, the quickest walk leads through a somewhat seedy area, and we certainly felt a little uncomfortable. If you approach from the riverside, though (which is not convenient to the station) then the neighbourhood seems a little more upmarket. We overhead reception staff tell others (when they checked in) to avoid the station area at night, something that we were not advised of. It's overpriced for what it is and what it offers
