"We spent four nights at Kalkudah Beach House at the end of a busy two weeks in Sri Lanka, hoping for some serious R&R. Kalkudah Beach House delivered it in spades! The setting of the hotel is truly extraordinary — palm-studded lawn gives way to miles and miles of brilliant white sand. Unlike the packed beaches of the south coast, Kalkudah Beach is quiet and unspoilt. I have never experienced a beach like it. The hotel itself is beautiful. We stayed in the carefully restored main house, which was a characterful and stylish space. We spent our time relaxing by the pool, jumping in the sea, and playing croquet on the lawn with arrack cocktail in hand. The food, cooked by chef Sugath and team, was superb. We couldn't get enough of the Watapallan in particular. The service was attentive and faultless. On day three we did a day trip out to Kumana National Park and had a stellar safari experience. This park (only accessible from the east coast) is a real gem, being far quieter than other parks we visited on our trip and teeming with wildlife. We had the most amazing time at Kalkudah Beach House. We can't wait to return with all our friends and family in tow!"

"We have visited Uga Bay by Uga Escapes three times now, and it continues to be a place very close to our hearts. It’s truly one of the most beautiful destinations in Pasikuda, with breathtaking sea views and an incredibly peaceful atmosphere that helps you completely relax. This visit was especially meaningful as we came to celebrate my wife’s birthday, and it also holds memories from our honeymoon. The team did a lovely job arranging the room upon arrival, and the overall ambiance, beach, and scenery were just as magical as we remembered. Traveling 6–7 hours to reach here is always worth it for the experience. However, this time we were quite disappointed with a few aspects of the service, which felt very different compared to our previous visits. We requested a late checkout extension from 11:00 AM to around 1:30 PM so we could enjoy a bit more time, especially since we had a long journey ahead and were on a full-board package with lunch included. Unfortunately, the response was simply “no,” with no real attempt to accommodate or offer alternatives—only a small extension until 11:30 AM. While we understand that the hotel may have bookings, what was disappointing was the lack of flexibility or effort to provide any alternative solution. As returning guests celebrating a special occasion, we expected a bit more consideration or at least a willingness to explore options. Additionally, during our previous visits, we were able to enjoy shisha by the beach, which added to the overall experience. This time, that request was declined without much explanation, which again felt inconsistent with the level of service we had experienced before. Uga Bay remains a stunning and special place, and we still love the property deeply. However, the service this time did not match the standards we had come to expect over the years. We hope the management takes this feedback seriously and brings back the level of hospitality that made us fall in love with this place in the first place."

"The hotel is in very poor condition, resembling an old, nearly broken building that doesn't feel safe. The staff is okay, but not exceptional. The management is extremely poor; no one from management spoke with us. When we asked at reception, they said the manager was busy and unavailable. We felt ignored as guests. The reception constantly provided false information. Don't book here and don't waste your money—they don't know how to communicate with guests. We suggest closing the hotel, as it already looks abandoned. It's better to shut it down."

"Do not do this to yourself. I repeat, DO NOT do this to yourself! This is not a hotel you want to stay at for anything more than $20 per night. Understaffed, haven’t had a working bar in weeks (if not months). The pool is a gangrenous mess, almost guaranteed to cripple the rest of your holiday with Montezuma’s Revenge (photo included). I’d imagine the food would be similar, if they bothered to cook any (evening restaurant picture included). No protection from insects in the shower windows. Some guests were using towels to block the swarms of wasps entering to terrorise them in a vulnerable state (photo included…of the towels…). Sacrificing one of the two bathmats provided as ‘towels’ (photo included) highlights just how terrifying the wasp situation must have been for some. If you like a few cold sundowners, don’t go looking here for any joy. There is no bar. The hotel claim they have been waiting for a ‘liquor order’ for 15 days, but it’s clearly a practised line they’ve been spouting for sometime longer than this. Photo of the empty ‘bar’, and the available stock attached. The beach is nice. Not enough umbrellas or beds (actually there probably are thinking about it, to accommodate the three desperate souls rattling around here). Looking at past reviews, this was once a passable hotel. It’s clearly fallen on hard times, and don’t appear to have enough funds left to actually, you know, run anything resembling a working hotel. $140 per night is truly criminal for this place. We ran away as soon as possible (a few hours), and luckily found refuge at the Sunrise Hotel next door for around the same rate. The Sunrise is absolutely wonderful. Only stay at this hotel if you are a masochist who likes burning money, and you have no interest in enjoying literally anything about being here."

"This house / boutique hotel is quite simply stunning with beautiful expansive views of the ocean. I would like to keep it to myself but feel compelled to tell everyone about it and to say that it is worth a stop whatever your final destination on the east coast of Sri Lanka. The staff are kind and attentive and their attention to detail is second to none. The young chef cooked the most tasty food. We had Sri Lankan curries including a first class crab curry and lots of vegetable side dishes. All were excellent. There is nothing to fault here.
