Returning after nearly two years to one of our favourite places built around the mansion of a regional chieftain of the past. Uga Ulagalla lies in the heart of Rajarata. Rajarata meaning "King's country" was one of three historical regions of Sri Lanka. Here lies the remains of many ancient cities including Anuradhapura the capital of Sri Lanka for over a thousand years from 3rd C BCE. Uga Ulagalla is a convenient place to visit the ancient cities as well as peek into the marvels of one of the greatest ancient hydraulic civilisations in the world. This luxury lodge is a veritable arboretum with spacious villas, spaced quite apart, each with an outdoor jacuzzi - an architectural masterpiece blending with nature. Every aspect here pleases the eye. Everything is immaculately kept, and one wonders what skill and ingenuity are needed to maintain a place as vast as this thus. The secret is leadership given by veteran GM Thashinthan Panchanathan ably supported by ever bright and breezy FOM Dilrukshi Priyadarsheni. We were always looked after to feel more than at home. What caught our eye that differentiates Uga Ulagalla from others in its class was the gender and ethnic diversity of its elegantly dressed and enthusiastic staff. The staff at Ulagalla truly represent Sri Lanka, a melting pot of cultures. We only hope that other top end resorts take a cue from this. The food finely crafted by Chef Ruwan was original and came with colourful presentation. The expansive pool set amongst the trees, cycling paths, paddy fields, the ancient tank or man-made lake behind ideal for kayaking, inhouse horse stable for horse riding etc makes this truly a place to relax. And for someone who wants to mix work and relaxation, the online connectivity was excellent. “In ancient days of Rajarata grand, Lies a land of grace, so vast and grand. We had an unbelievable stay and we’re sad that it wasn’t for longer. The colonial architecture of the main house and the villas was beautiful, and the property itself is just wonderful the experience and walk around. The staff were incredibly welcoming, and the couples spa treatment was worth the trip alone. Would absolutely come back and can highlight recommend

We recently had our 3rd stay at Uga Ulagalla we were again thoroughly impressed by the exceptional welcoming and friendly service we received from all the hotel staff. From the moment we arrived, We were greeted with warm smiles and genuine hospitality. Our room (23) was immaculate and luxurious and we really appreciated the regular little touches from the room staff The food was excellent, and plentiful and all the restaurant staff we so attentive, and helpful. We love the fact that you can see so much wildlife, such as monkeys, lizards, and so many types of birds just walking arounds the grounds and surrounding area (we were lucky enough to see owls 3 times). We really enjoyed the village cycle ride and scenic drive with picnic. Also highly recommended is the horse riding with Ramesh, who is so knowledgeable and clearly loves the horses he looks after. All the staff show dedication and excellent service in whatever role they undertake. Thanks to Kusal for driving us back and fore to our room when we decided not to use the bikes, and his assistance when Paul needed help! Others to mention are Dilrushika, Sakila, Demutu and Sakun Throughout our stay, everyone went above and beyond to make us feel welcome like returning friends. It was evident that the staff genuinely cared about the comfort and satisfaction of their guests. Eager to help with any queries they may encounter. Overall, our experience at Uga Ugalla was nothing short of extraordinary. The combination of luxurious accommodations, exceptional dining, and unparalleled service made for another truly unforgettable stay. We can't wait to return for a fourth time and create more memories at this wonderful hotel.

Amazing state and gorgeous villas! For me, the best hotel in Sri Lanka. Need to do: Kamatha Restaurant experience (at the hotel). Great, tasty and traditional food prepared by Manel, and served as its finests by Diluka and Gayantha (so nice people)

Uga Ulagalla as a hotel is top class and couldn’t recommend enough. One on the highlights of our trip was dining in the Kamatha Restaurant on the resort. We were taken care of by Gayantha, Diluka and Manel who looked after us so well. Not to mention the food which was DELICIOUS and full of so many flavours. Honestly could not recommend this enough!

Absolutely loved our stay here. From the welcome we received upon arrival to checking out, everything was truly amazing. The staff is extremely friendly and welcoming. Jathu was exceptionally helpful and informative about everything, and would always greet us with a smile whenever we saw her. The room is spacious, with all the necessary amenities and the room service was very efficient. The food was truly delicious. We enjoyed everything we had, especially dinner. The menu’s are creative, offering everyone something unique to try. Overall the property is beautiful, well maintained, offering ample space and privacy for anyone. It was our first family trip with our baby, and we really enjoyed the trip as the hotel and staff was very family friendly. Hope to be back soon & thank you to everyone who made our stay memorable! :)

We had a 2 night stay at Ulagalla last weekend (May 2024). Four of us (2 couples) were rebooked here from Uga Jungle Beach due to bad weather. It was a very happy rebooking, and we were grateful for the change. The property is massive, and the amenities and service were top notch. From the start at reception, to mealtimes , housekeeping, F&B, to the naturalists - everyone went above and beyond to serve and care for us well. We felt exceedingly pampered through the stay. The staff makes personal and thoughtful recommendations, considering the client. They accommodated us for an afternoon kayak ride despite it not being current practice. They tried to accommodate a need for a bicycle with support wheels for an adult , which I am sure they would have succeeded in if they had ample notice. The rooms were beautifully furnished and comfortable, with many thoughtful touches. Food was lovely, but we did wish for more options during lunch ( it was the same menu repeated). Would definitely revisit. We felt extremely pampered throughout!
