A cross between a bed & breakfast and a boutique hotel, Alma de Sedona has a lot going for it. It's location is in a residential neighborhood in West Sedona, offering a respite from the sometimes overwhelming hoard of tourists and traffic in the main part of Sedona. The grounds are large and beautiful, with interesting features like the Medicine Wheel and spectacular views. The common room, where breakfast is served, is spacious and inviting. The breakfast is very good. They have a great chef who makes a different cooked to order 2 course breakfast each morning. The innkeepers, who appear to be a married couple, are friendly, helpful and genuinely try to make guests feel coddled. So I want to love Alma de Sedona, but I just can't. This is my second visit in 6 years and it doesn't look like they've done any updating to the rooms themselves in that time. The wood furniture looks worn and scratchy. The walls could use a new coat of paint. The carpet has seen better days. The bathroom though is gorgeous with designer tilework, a separate shower and whirlpool tub and two sinks for couples. You'd think with 2 sinks they would have 2 hand towel racks, but they don't. In fact they could use another hand towel rack and bath towel rack along with a hook on the back of the door. Also better lighting. I have a pet peeve about hotel rooms that use such low wattage light bulbs that its hard to see anything in the room after dark. This place has that problem. While some are low wattage LED bulbs, several are the really old curly fluorescent bulbs that made the lighting in the rooms even worse, especially in the closet. The other problem with the rooms is lack of storage space. There are no drawers or shelf space to put any clothes or other items a traveler may have. There is a small walk-in closet that's stuffed with bathrobes, extra pillows and blankets, but not much room for clothes. The very small flat screen TV is deep inside an old armoire. Kind of like the set up they used to store TV's when they had big picture tubes. A huge improvement the owners could make is to replace the old armoires with dressers and put a new larger TV on top of the dresser. That would provide storage drawers for guests and make the TV easier to see from different angles in the room. This place could be great if the owners would just do some updating to the rooms. Not sure if I'll be back in Sedona anytime soon, but probably wouldn't stay here again unless I was sure there had been improvements to the rooms.
