In a quiet corner of the mountains, we have settled in Maliu Township, Zengjia Mountain, Guangyuan. Hidden among the Qinba Mountains, this is a naturally formed cool refuge in the wild. Forests cover 74% of the area; mountain breezes drift all year round; negative oxygen ions reach as high as 33,000 per cubic centimeter. Every deep breath is filled with the pristine crispness of the forest. In midsummer, far from the city’s scorching heat, the mountains remain at a constant 23°C, with a natural day-night temperature difference of 8–10°C. No air conditioning is needed—the evening breeze carries its own coolness, soothing away all the heat and fatigue of summer. A land nurtures its culture. This quiet mountain wilderness holds a century-old intangible cultural heritage: Maliu embroidery. Locals call it “Zahua” (flower stitching). With no draft to trace, it relies entirely on the mountains and rivers in the embroiderer’s eyes and the everyday warmth in her heart; counting the threads of the cloth, she creates a picture stitch by stitch, entirely by hand. For hundreds of years, the craft has not depended on written records or classroom teaching, but only on mothers passing it down to daughters and neighbors teaching neighbors, continuing through the hands of generation after generation of rural women. Since ancient times, a saying has circulated in the mountains: To know whose daughter is clever, look at her needlework. In the past, girls in the mountains learned to hold a needle and embroider from a young age, stitching mountain wildflowers, field work, and the warmth of daily life into cloth. A stitch holds mountains and seas; a thread tells of hometown feeling. Within a tiny piece of embroidery are the four seasons and scenes of Maliu Township, and the land’s simple tenderness and nostalgia. We use the mountain retreat as a vessel to give this cultural lineage of mountain needle and thread a proper home.
