One of the prettiest hotels I have been in in Japan. The staff were fantastic and were always helpful, even going so far as walking us out to the main street to reach our transportation. Just amazing.

Genji Hotel Kyoto is one of the most worthwhile experiences in my trip to Kyoto. Although the hotel is not in a convenient location, and because it is located in a narrow alley, you have to walk for about 1 minute after taking a taxi, but I would still highly recommend it to every traveler who is going to Kyoto.  After walking through countless busy streets/malls every day, there is always a sense of serenity at home. The design of the hotel itself is excellent. You can feel the designer's thoughts not only on the architecture, but also on many details for the guests: from the small garden in the bathroom to the electric switch beside the bed. What's even more amazing is the attentiveness of the staff. They don't hesitate to put on big smiles when they go out and come back every day. On the last day when I left Kyoto City, I didn’t wear down because I was afraid it would be too hot at the airport. The staff even chased me out and gave me a warm pack. Although I have stayed here for four nights, I still want to stay here again and slow down to appreciate every corner of the hotel. Next time if the weather is not too cold, I would like to have a drink in the rooftop garden. Thank you Kyoto Genji for bringing me wonderful memories of this trip.  

Very quiet, the restaurant on the top floor overlooks those famous attractions, and the service is also very good.

Our family of four spent four amazing nights at Genji Kyoto over Christmas. The hotel is amazing in every way. We had two adjoining rooms behind one front door. The rooms are very large, with a table and sitting area for breakfasts. We enjoyed both Japanese and Western breakfasts. The breakfasts were outstanding and an amazing way to start each day. The bathrooms are amazing and we enjoyed the large bathtubs every single day. The rooftop is beautiful although it was a little too chilly for us to enjoy in December. We loved the quiet neighborhood where Genji is located. The staff was very helpful ordering taxis for us and walking us to the end of the street every time they arrived. The staff also made a Michelin dinner reservation for us one evening. I just cannot recommend this charming, lovely hotel enough. It was perfect in every way.

We stayed here for four nights and absolutely loved it. The hotel is in a great location - close enough to the major tourist attractions of Gion and the surrounding area, but removed enough to provide a quiet respite. Excellent design, lot's of the rooms overlook the river, but we had the Garden Premium double on the ground level which was very cozy and had a wonderfully laid out bathroom with rock garden that flowed into it. Everything about our stay was perfect. We loved having breakfast on the rooftop and the hotel was extremely helpful with providing itinerary suggestions and booking restaurants. Would stay again in a heartbeat!

This is a charming hotel that is classy and comfortable. Even though its architecture is contemporary, it has design details that reference traditional features and techniques. Their Japanese garden in the lobby has a back wall that looks like wood, but is actually concrete with imprinted wood patterns. It was so cool! Our room was spacious with very comfortable beds, and the view was just amazing. Looking at the birds and fish and turtles on the river was really fun and calming. But the best part was getting to know the wonderful staff. They all speak English well and are incredibly friendly and helpful. We are grateful to them for a most memorable trip.

I am glad I returned to stay here for the second time, this time with my two children. We had absolutlely the best experience. Not only were the rooms super clean and comfortable as ever, but they have been enhanced with more charming details. Our breakfast and meals were delicious and beautifully presented. The staff recognized us, and were helpful, efficient and friendly in a way that you feel is coming from their hearts. They looked after us in every way, showing us the bus and train stations and providing suggestions for restaurants and activities. I totally recommend this hotel to anyone who appreciates good design and good people, not to mention beautiful gardens, free bicycles and free self-service laundry. This is surely our home away from home in Kyoto!

A beautiful boutique hotel, nestled in a quiet corner of Kyoto overlooking the Kamogawa river. Spacious rooms, tastefully designed in a modern Japanese style with excellent amenities. The rooftop terrace is an oasis to enjoy cocktails with fantastic views over the city. If you’re after a serene location, but only a short walk from the hustle and bustle of Kyoto you can’t do better. The staff are so helpful and friendly. One of the highlights was breakfast, certainly the best we enjoyed during our trip of the far east. Do take advantage of the hotel’s bicycles, arguably the best way to get around. We can’t wait to go back.

I guess this should be one of the best hotels in Kyoto. Residing right along the Kamogawa, great design and the rooftop bar, brings you a direct view of the Kiyomizu temple and the Kyoto Tower. It’s a member of the Design Hotels Group and a member of the Marriott Group.

The Genji Kyoto (a member of Design Hotels and the Marriot Bonvoy chain) is a beautiful boutique hotel, situated in the lovely and quiet neighborhood of Gojo-Kawaramachi. I took a taxi from Kyoto Station to the hotel (~10-minute drive). I showed the taxi driver the directions map that the hotel has on its website. The taxi dropped me off at the ‘Rokken Bridge’, about a 2-minute walk to the interior street the hotel entrance is on. I guess that it’s difficult to access the small street by taxi since I booked a taxi when leaving the hotel and the pickup point was at the same spot as where I was dropped off on arrival. A staff member helped me with my luggage when I checked out and took my bags to the taxi. The closest bus stop (Kawaramachi Shomen) is a 5-minute walk from the hotel which is useful to get to central Kyoto. Kiyomizu-Gojo train station (Keihan Main Line) is a 6-minute walk from the hotel which conveniently gets you to the Fushimi-Inari shrine and the Gion district. A 20-minute walk from the hotel shall put you in the center of Gion. The hotel is quite new (~3 years old) and has been beautifully designed and decorated, combining modern and traditional Japanese elements. The hotel staff throughout my stay were superb. All the staff I encountered were friendly and professional and spoke very good English. Other than the room itself, I did not use the other hotel amenities, nor did I have breakfast/lunch/dinner at the hotel. I was escorted to my room (River Balcony Deluxe) and was given an introductory tour/explanation of it. A welcome drink of my choice awaited me. The studio-type room design and decor, like the hotel in general, was great. Everything in the room is high quality and gives you a sense of luxury and comfort. The scenic view from my room was fantastic as the hotel is right on the banks of the Kamo River. The room’s balcony was the perfect place to watch the world go by below. The heated bathroom floor and the huge rain showerhead made for a splendid showering experience. The queen-sized bed was very comfortable and made the perfect place to fall asleep after a day of exploring. Complimentary bottled water was provided daily. The room’s safe was large enough to accommodate my 15” laptop. The Wi-fi signal was strong and stable. The TV channel selection was good and had some international channel selections as well. Initially, it was a bit confusing trying to channel surf and it was easier to pick a channel from the main TV menu screen that is shown on the TV when you turn it on. The hotel's top floor has a lovely open balcony. Breakfast and dinner are served there, as well as a bar in the evening. The views from the balcony of the surrounding area are great. As you would expect for a small luxury boutique hotel, the price is not cheap (~600 USD per night). However, given the location, quality of the hotel, and service, I felt that the price was worth it.
