"There are fresh flowers everywhere in the hotel, which will soothe your soul. All the staff members were very attentive and made me feel tired from being away. Due to the rain that day, I noticed a sign saying that some roads were closed. I was panicked (after all, there was no other road in the mountains) and called the hotel. They immediately looked into the matter and called me back. I was very grateful that I managed to get there. The hot water was good, the food was good, and I enjoyed it. "The hot springs were very nice, and the food was delicious. The facilities are old, but I suppose that can't be helped; they'll have to be completely renovated or rebuilt. The musty smell everywhere was a real problem. However, what's really disappointing is the lack of consideration for the guests. Two typhoons were predicted, so the day before my stay I called and asked if I could change my dates. Not a cancellation, but a change. They told me that they couldn't do it now because they had already started preparations. I was disappointed, but I went out in the heavy rain. That night the rain got heavier, and the next day I received an email from the inn in Izu Kogen that I had booked, saying, "Please don't push yourself, and we won't charge you a cancellation fee this time because of the circumstances." I think that was a sincere response that considered the guest's perspective. The next morning, when I checked out and told them about the response from the inn in Izu Kogen, they said that other guests didn't cancel, but I don't think that's a valid reason. I wasn't keen on going. Also, the innkeeper said that this amount of rain would be fine, but I'm not a local, so I don't know that. I drove there, and I was worried because I had read on the news that there was a possibility of road closures. I was given a 5000 yen refund, but I don't think that was the right thing to do. I booked through Jalan, but for some reason it was treated as a cancellation after check-out. I would like the feelings of the customers to be respected."

"My wife and I just returned from an incredible 1-night stay at this ryokan. We really enjoyed our time, including the room, the dinner, the private outdoor onsen in our room, and the beautiful little onsen town of Shuzenji. The stay is very private - all rooms were booked during our stay, but we never heard nor saw another guest. We woke up early in the morning and went for a walk to the top of the forested hill above the town where there’s a great view of Mount Fuji, then returned in time for the beautiful breakfast in our room. Service was wonderful, with minimal language barrier. We would love to come back again some day. Shuzenji is about 1.5 hours from Tokyo on a combination of Shinkansen to Mishima, then local train to Shuzenji, then it’s a 10-min taxi ride from the station to the ryokan. You can also take the daily Odoriko Express (the regular Odoriko, not the super fancy Saphir Odoriko) straight from Tokyo Station to Shuzenji, but it’s 2 hours and doesn’t give you much flexibility when you travel. On our way to Tokyo, we ended up having the taxi take us all the way from the ryokan to the Shinkansen station in Mishima, which was 8,000 yen and faster and more comfortable than the local train. If doing this again, I may also consider renting a car in Mishima so as to have more freedom to explore the surrounding area around Shuzenji. It may be helpful to know that the ryokan is adjacent to a street that runs through town. We stayed in the Ichiju room, which was one of the largest rooms at the property. I was a little surprised that the view from the front of the room was over the front of the ryokan and the road. The road was not terribly busy and it wasn’t a big deal, but know that all rooms are not looking out over a bucolic garden as the pictures may suggest. Our onsen was on the side of the building and was completely private."

"This hotel is steeped in Japanese charm, from the room designs to the stunning front desk area views (with many fish banners swaying over a bridge), and even the exquisite small gardens within the hotel – everything reflects Japanese aesthetics. I opted for the 'dinner and breakfast included' plan, and the Kaiseki cuisine was not only beautifully presented and incredibly delicious but also offered a different dining location each day, allowing guests to enjoy varied window views. Kikuzawa was truly a wonderful surprise during this Izu trip. One area for improvement: I sent an email to the hotel before my arrival but never received a reply."
