"This was the first time in many many years I had stayed in a youth hostel. It was amazing. The place was spotless, The rooms were comfortable, the breakfasts were excellent, facilities were first class, including the drying room, showers, toilets, secure storage and kitchen facilities. There was even under-building bike storage. Karl and Lorna, the couple who run the hostel, were so friendly and helpful. Very close to other amenities. Would absolutely stay here again."

"This is the first time I’ve said on here avoid at all costs. Positive: comfy bed and good size room. Free parking and a bar. Negative: Exceptionally poor service at breakfast-allow at least an hour to finally get and eat a hot breakfast. We sent the porridge back to be reheated, we had to ask for the honey to go with it, we sent the toast back to get some colour on it rather than eating warm bread, then we had to ask for butter and jam ! No sign but you help yourself to coffee, (just put a sign up and it’s no problem). They only part service the rooms- they replenish tea coffee etc but don’t make your bed. They do not serve evening meals (which is probably a good thing!). Lack of staff around in the day and at breakfast. We reported twice our towel rack was broken and nothing done about it. We mentioned to a local we were staying here and she said oh no never stay there. That says it all really ! Having paid for their suite we did rather foolishly expect a sea view, beware you don’t get one !"

"We enjoyed the privacy as it was at least a km away from the main road. A very nice hideaway if you want to get away from the bustling town. One thing though, please ensure you have your own car/transport covered as public transportation on Islay is not as convenient versus a normal city. Overall, a great place to stay! We’ll be back!"

Port Charlotte Hotel ★★★★

"This was a fantastic place to stay for our multi-day whiskey tasting tour on Islay. It is located on the water and offers beautiful views of the bay. There's a place to swim if you are brave enough. The rooms are very comfortable, good-sized and well appointed. The staff was incredibly welcoming and helpful with a few small requests -- i.e. packing tape to box up our whiskey! We chose the hotel as it had a restaurant on-property--and were glad we did. We ate both our dinners and breakfasts at the hotel. The food and service were outstanding and they have a fantastic wine list."

"This is my third stay at Bowmore House, my first being ten years ago. The room was excellent and comfortable, with a superb bathroom and a powerful shower. The cleanliness and order were impeccable. I highly recommend the full Scottish breakfast, which includes tattie scones and haggis. Andrew, the proprietor, provided a complimentary dram to each guest."
