Location and Access – Ella is a good 5 to 6 hours by road from Colombo Airport. Also accessible by train. Any route, by road or train, into Ella is spectacular with mountain views. When I first visited Ella many years ago there were no made up tarmac roads very few places to stay or eat apart from the Dream Café. Today the town has changed radically mainly due to travel backpackers and bloggers sharing information on the internet; resulting in an influx of visitors. The place is now overcrowded and overdeveloped with a variety of souvenir shops, cafes and bars and tattoo parlours. And most noticeably noisy! The Dream café is no longer a dream! In my view Ella is becoming one of the worst examples of “over tourism” Although I would not normally wish to stay there, Ella was a convenient overnight stay enroute to another destination. I chose the Oak Ray hotel which is situated along with others in the town itself. The hotel can be seen on Google Maps Street View. There are many other accommodation options in the surrounding area Reception – Not having booked ahead, reception staff checked me in quickly Public Areas/Decor – Quite modern looking and spacious. Pleased to note some of the corridor/landing areas were being redecorated. The external areas including around the small pool all kept tidy. There is lift. Guest Room – Like many hotels in Sri Lanka the rooms were originally built and designed to a very high standard. However, in the room I had there were significant signs of wear and tear due to lack of any upgrade. Initially there was no mini fridge but one was provided on request. A large enough space but nowhere to sit comfortably. Tea and coffee making etc provided. A small balcony with metal seating overlooking the street below Amenities including Entertainment – Small flat screen TV was not working due to monkeys having gnawed through the aerial wires!. Ample electrical sockets. Free WiFi with acceptable connectivity. Lighting – Adequate Noise – no noise disturbance during the night Food & Beverage – I opted to have dinner at a local restaurant. The buffet breakfast (included in the price) was average. Dreadful coffee. Very busy due to the large number of guests who all seemed to disappear at about 9:00 am; in time to get on their tour buses Value for Money – The price is around the same for similar hotels nearby. There are more luxurious and expensive properties and very many basic “back packer” hostels and B&B’s to choose from nearby. Bearing in mind the overall condition of the property and that of my room I cannot say it was overpriced – but what I can say is that I have paid the same price or less for much better quality/superior accommodation elsewhere X Factor – There is nothing to make this hotel more outstanding than many similar in the area. Convenient for travellers passing through the town or touring in the area During my stay in Sri Lanka I used the services of Kulansa Tours who I have relied on in the past for a
