Saga Tenryu-ji Temple

Tenryu-ji Temple is one of the most important Zen temples in Kyoto. Located in the Saga district of Ukyo Ward, Kyoto City, it is adjacent to the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. After visiting the temple, you can take a stroll through the nearby bamboo grove. For more details, please check my other post. Tenryu-ji Temple was founded in 1339 to commemorate Emperor Go-Daigo. The temple is not only an important training ground for Japanese Zen Buddhism but also a part of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. The temple is renowned for its beautiful gardens, especially the Sogenchi Garden, a National Special Historic Site and Special Place of Scenic Beauty designed by Muso Soseki, which perfectly embodies the spirit of Zen aesthetics. The basic admission fee to visit the temple is 800 yen, which includes access to the garden. It is worth noting that an additional fee is required to visit the interior buildings of the temple. The main buildings of the temple include the Dharma Hall, Abbot's Quarters, and the Kitchen, each showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of traditional Japanese architecture. The gardens of Tenryu-ji Temple offer different sceneries in each season. In spring, you can enjoy the cherry blossoms in full bloom, in summer the lush greenery, in autumn the brilliant red leaves, and in winter the snow-covered landscape. The design of Sogenchi Garden cleverly incorporates the backdrop of Arashiyama, creating a 'borrowed scenery' effect that demonstrates the high artistry of Japanese garden design. In addition to the natural scenery, Tenryu-ji Temple also preserves many precious cultural relics and artworks. The most famous of these is the ceiling painting of the temple, known as the 'Cloud Dragon,' painted by Kano Eitoku, which vividly depicts a dragon soaring through the clouds. The temple is open to visitors all year round. It is recommended to visit early in the morning to avoid the crowds and to experience the serene and tranquil atmosphere of the Zen temple. A walk from the temple towards the bamboo grove, with its lush greenery, provides a stark contrast to the solemnity of the temple, offering visitors an unforgettable experience.
