Cocos Castaway

We haven't tried all the accommodations on West Island, but Cocos Castaway must be the best! It offers a fantastic view over the ocean, comfortable beds, and well-functioning air conditioning. Moreover, the car we rented from the friendly and helpful hosts, Annelies and Graham, was both good and affordable. We stayed for nine days at Cocos Castaway, and the place earns five stars and our warmest recommendations. Nothing to complain about.

We spent a week at the Cocos Castaway during our trip to Cocos (Keeling) Island. We couldn’t have been much happier with all aspects of our stay. To start with, the location was fantastic with an amazing oceanfront setting – not a good swimming beach, but beautiful nonetheless. We spent a lot of time out on the oceanfront, watching the sea turtles and reef sharks swimming around the lagoon. The property is located literally right across the road from the airport terminal, about a 50m walk. Furthermore, all of the main restaurants/cafes, supermarket, and visitors center are all less than 100m away. Our room was the end unit of a tri-plex. Although we didn’t have an ocean view from our room, we did have a very large, comfortable, and private veranda. We actually ate most of our meals out on the chairs/tables at the waterfront, just to enjoy the views and sunsets. Our room was large and airy with plenty of windows. The kitchen was fully functional and we were able to cook some basic meals there. The AC unit worked very well, however the Wifi was a bit slow and on the weak side, though still usable for the most part. The bed was very comfortable and the location peaceful, so we had some really good sleeps. There was a TV as well with Australian programming, however we just mainly used the internet for getting our news. We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay and would highly recommend this place to all other travelers. Try to get an ocean view room, if possible.

The unit we stayed in was really comfortable, and had everything we needed during the stay. Annelies and Graham were very friendly and helpful, and the location is close to places to eat and other amenities. We enjoyed our stay here very much, and look forward to returning with extended family before too long.

We really enjoyed our stay. The rooms were more spacious than expected and the two verandahs let us make the most of the breezes. It was handy to the airport, and bar. The owners were helpful. It was easy to sit and view the Indian Ocean. We would thoroughly recommend. The owner put us in touch with the local bird enthusiast, which was great.

We stayed in a 2-bedroom deluxe unit. It had everything we needed. Lots of thoughtful additions like 2 different size esky’s, picnic supplies, plastic containers for packing your picnic food. It was great having a washing machine which meant we could take a lot less clothes and more food. The unit was beachfront and sleeping to the sound of the sea was lovely. The aircon worked well. Annalies and Graham were great hosts always available to answer our questions. We had an 11 month baby with us and we were supplied with a baby bath, which doubled as a splash pool, a cot and high chair. Very central to everything including the airport which is just across the road. As there was no new visitors coming after us we were able to stay in our accommodation until we had to board the flight which was a huge bonus with a baby.

The location to the three cafes, supermarket, club, airport & info centre is the best. We booked superior unit 3. It’s exactly as described on their website. Clean, spacious, very well maintained. Beach one side, cafe and airport the other. Only 2 flights per week so no real disruption re air traffic. No hotplate in this unit. You have bbq access, microwave, kettle & toaster & electric frying pan. Queen bed (with low footer for those extremely tall people!). We travel with pillows but the 4 on the bed were good. We like very flat, low pillows. I’d say the ones provided were medium. (In case you are like us re pillows!) Bike & car hire available from the accommodation which is really handy. Washing machine in the kitchen also super convenient. No laundry mats should you not have one. You really need a bike or car to reach the swimming beaches. Chairs are beach side (above sandbagged retaining wall) where we enjoyed eating breakfast & spotting turtles.
