Great hotel in a Disney style old French Village let dramatically down by not having hot water in the morning as we were getting ready to leave for the next part of our journey. Had to have bath and shower with cold water. When I complained to reception on checkout there wasn’t a single apology. The girl just said “yeah we have a problem with the system”! That’s not good enough and she should have certainly reduced our rate for the room. Learn some good old Customer Service and it made our trip to Vonnas a total waste of our time.

We entered the restaurant with high hopes. After all, this is one of the most eminent chefs of all France. The venerable gentleman approached our table early with a halting gait. It is impressive that he is still active at 82. Alas, he no longer controls the events. The champagne, which was served as an aperitif, was a bit sweet not drinkable. My foie gras was good, but the bread served along with it reminded me rather of supermarket toast than a brioche. The Poulet de Bresse was very very tough and almost not edible. The best part of the meal were the peas. The service was not friendly and not very knowledgeable. All in all, I am afraid it is the better choice to go to a roadside inn than to pay 300 euros for two on a mediocre dinner. Generally, the issue with the village Georges Blanc is that it lacks taste. If you compare this with Troisgros, Pic or Guérard, the difference is striking.

We were disappointed. The room are old and certainly not of a 5* hotel. More of a 3* auberge. There is a concerted effort to npretent it is an upgrade place but its tired look, the cold unresponsive reception staff, and the old air con and the dark corridors when one is trying to get to the outdoor pool, and the rather dirty river with seaweeds rather than waterlilies don't quote match this up. The breakfast was indeed excellent and the staff great. And the breakfast area lovely which made us think that we got the wrong end of the hotel. We could not stop thinking that if we had the top room and we dined at the top restaurant, our experience would have been different... which made our disappointment even more acute as we felt we were treated as the poor relatives. A hotel strives to give the best experience to all, not the ones in the top rooms only... the village itself is a hommage to the great chef... but it has an artificial vibe, a bit like Disneyland in France. Maybe good for weddings, but an auberge down the road would appear more authentic to us. Overall, not our kind of experience.

Georges Blanc is a legend and we've stayed at the hotel many times. However, the restaurant is the stand out reason for our stay which is without doubt one of the very best and I say this heving eaten at lots of 2 and 3 star Michelin restaurants. The hotel and restaurant isn't the flashiest of places, but that's what we like as it's steeped in authenicity and a timeless reflection of classic French hospitality and food.

Three words: spacious, clean and comfortable. We stayed at Les Saules for two nights and were very pleased with the accommodation. I think the hotel is actually a little underrated as a 3*. The hotel is located across the square from it's posher parent (Relais and Chateaux) but as a resident you have access to the spa and breakfast if you want them. You can also walk around the beautiful garden. Our first floor room was on a corner and had two balconies, one overlooking the river and the other towards the square. All air-conditioned and with a large shower room. We also had two meals in the Ancienne Auberge across the road, which were excellent. If I had one small complaint it would be with regards check-in and check-out. You have to go across to the other hotel for this and I have to say it was a very lukewarm welcome. Coldly efficient. Was glad I didn't have to walk past the reception desk each time we went in and out. For trips in the area, make a point of visiting the Royal Abbey at Brou (Bourg en Bresse). Not only is this an outstanding historical monument (with good audio guide), it also has an excellent art collection spanning several centuries. And for a less pricey coffee or drink in Vonnas, try the little cafe on the corner of the market place, 'Le Trotteur' - friendly, cheerful service.
