The Bull Hotel

The staff were welcoming, helpful and friendly. Service provided was very good. The coffee was excellent. Breakfast itself was fine. Quite a few different style options to choose from with vegetarian choices available Nice atmosphere.

We stayed in the cock and bull suite. It wasn’t a suite had a roll top bath that took forever to fill. Not enough towels and no shampoo. Not worth the money I paid for it. Shower was cheap just a riser rail not nearly enough powerful. Very basic room but the worst thing was the noise from outside which is the pub it’s attached to, which doesn’t stop until 2 am on a Saturday night. My advice stay somewhere else . The cock hotel looked nice a few doors down!

We ate in the pub/restaurant/cafe (couldn’t work out what it was really!?) The waitress was abrupt and rude from the onset, and made us feel incredibly unwelcome. We felt embarrassed to bother her ! Daughter has severe allergies so asked to replace the halloumi with bacon and told there would be a £2.20 addition charge for this. Questioned that we weren’t having halloumi (more expensive than bacon!?) and still she insisted on an additional charge. She did back down eventually but she was just so rude. Told the place was shutting at 4 pm two times, and were pretty much shoved out the side door at 4 (we were on our way out anyway). Food was average. Honestly haven’t felt so unwelcome somewhere for a long time.

The refurbished rooms are lovely and the bed large and extremely comfy. The room we had looked onto the pub owned by the hotel & so noisy customers outside meant sleep came when they went home. Breakfast is catered by the cafe below the rooms which is not part of the hotel and I found the menu extremely poor and didn’t really like any of the options. No cooked full English or traditional options - just a choice of 4 random options such as scrambled egg or beans on toast, pancakes with lemon and sugar, melted cheese bagel with gherkins & another option which I can’t remember. Orange juice had 3 cubes of ice in it to make the glass look fuller, so had to drink it quickly before it was watered down by the melting ice. If you wanted anything from the cafes breakfast menu and not hotel guest fixed menu then you had to pay for it in full and cannot mix and add items from cafe menu to fixed menu. It makes you think the cafe does not want to cater for hotel guests. I would advise not booking a room with breakfast as it’s a waste of money - better off finding a ‘Spoons for that. The Hotel itself though is lovely, just a shame about the breakfast.
