We had taken a group to this YHA in July. We had just walked into the building and we had one of the door closer fall onto one of the group which they after had blamed us for the damage. They claimed we had made a noise on the ground which was true but as this seemed a very secluded area you should have been told that there are neigbours around. If you are looking for somewhere to have a great time as a group this is NOT the place.The staff on site had turned up early and claimed we had made a mess they never gave us a chance to tidy up prior to us leaving and they had then charged us extra for cleaning. I would recommend to keep far away from this hostel.

Great accommodation at low rates in a fantastic location. We had two family rooms, which were clean and well looked after. We went to a family do and were glad to be able to let ourselves in late on the Saturday night. One had a problem with a shower that wouldn't turn off. When I reported it, the warden was helpful.

Perfect base for national forest, seeing friends and family fun. We went to the lowe alpine/rab shop to replace some kit. Arthur mcglen for an hour. Calke Abbey and back to yha for tea. Fab kitchen facilities. Then a night time walk with head torches. Then Sunday a day at conkers

There's no wifi in the rooms, it only costs £40 to buy a wifi extender, not exactly difficult to bring wifi to all areas of the hostel. It is the 21st century, there should be wifi available in the rooms. its daft that people are using up their data using 4G, which doesn't work in some rooms.

This hostel is a peaceful haven on the edge of the National Forrest. I visit year after year and always feel fully refreshed and rejuvenated when I leave - be it after one night or a week!. I find the location, layout and staff at the hostel all contribute to the amazing atmosphere at YHA National Forest. I fully recommend a stay here whether you be a great big family, a couple or just a single traveller.

the staff were friendly and informative. they had local knowledge of what to see and do. the shared spaces and shared kitchen were clean . the room was clean and aired on arrival. small problem on arrival with first room but when brought to the attention of staff it was quickly remedied. we have stayed here before and hope to stay again

This is a great new hostel building located in the heart of the National Forest. This forest is largely based on reclaimed industrial land. So great for industrial archology, disused railway lines etc. But the tree cover is so extensive it really feels like one big nature reserve. Very relaxing time. Nearby towns of Ashby de la Zouch and Swadlincote are easy traffic free walks away. Try going to Church Greasly too where an old Norman hill fort is located. in the nearby village (Moiria) is an old foundry in parkland with craft shops and nearby is a coop food store. Also very near by is Conkers a forest theamed attraction with adventrue playgrounds etc. I really recommend this for people who want a few quiet and interesting few days away from the rush of modern living.

Excellent hostel (we stayed in an ensuite triple-room). Quiet, green location. Lots of easy, peaceful woodland walking close to hand. We ended up at this hostel largely by accident, but want to come back and explore the area more fully. The room was very quiet, and the self-catering rooms seem to be well away from parts of the hostel used by school groups. The only problem we found was the green LED from the emergency lighting unit in the bedroom was a bit disturbing when trying to sleep - anyone for whom that would be a problem might want to bring an eye-shade.

I can't hold it against this great site that we chose the hottest day of the years and in UK we select not to be prepared for this. The site is purpose built and, compared to the YHA's I am more familiar with, is spacious and spotless. Friendly staff, easy checkin, good self catering facilities, ample parking, good security and easily found. Great location to walk/ride the forest disused train tracks. Great location if visiting Leicester, Derby, Coventry etc.. One thing to be aware of - the bike lock up is only accessible when there is staff on site. So if you have locked your bike up and want to get at it before 8 a.m. or after 10 a.m. you may be out of luck
